Okay, mom, I’m all set :).
We had our first night out last weekend. Some friends of ours offered to stay here with Asher so that we could go out and have a bit of a date. We decided we’d be crazy if we didn’t take advantage of the offer, but we hadn’t left Asher with anyone yet, so there was a little anxiety going into the evening. Since we’ve gotten him on a schedule, his bedtimes are (more) predictable… nonetheless, we were worried he would wake up screaming at some point.
I guess it’s sort of cliché to say that parents can get a little crazy when it comes to leaving their kids for the first time… and with that said, I can’t think of anything more appropriate than this “Friends” clip, which pretty much sums up the whole experience. This is Rachel and Ross’ first time to go out and leave their daughter, Emma, with someone (Ross’ mom)… as they’re getting ready to go, they accidentally lock themselves out of the apartment with Emma still inside, hilarity ensues (those of you with iPhones can watch it here):

Anyways, back to our date… I made a reservation at a place we like, and we got ready for our big night out, which was just dinner, but still… it felt like a big night out. When we got to the restaurant, Candice said that she wished our little camera rig would work away from home so we could see him while we were out (she claims she only wanted to watch him for a second)… I said that this basically defeated the purpose of getting out of the house and going on a date! We had a great time and laughed a lot. We talked a little bit about Asher, but I was glad that we still had other stuff to talk about as well.
It was sort of like old times again, back when it was just the two of us and we did whatever the heck we wanted… oh how times have changed :). Having the night out was fun, but by about 9:30 we were both ready to call it a night… when you’re used to going to bed at 9 and you know you’re going to have to get up at 3am, staying out late just doesn’t sound as good as sleeping.
Asher Henry loves to be outside! He can be fussing it up like nobody’s business and the minute we take him outside, he chills out, gets wide-eyed, and stops the fussing. Usually. So when we get stir crazy and just need to get out of the house, we walk. Sometimes we hit the road with a girlfriend, sometimes with Collin, sometimes just the babe and me. I sure am hoping this nice weather continues!
Last week we caught Asher on video rolling over… this is really the first time he’s been able to roll over multiple times and it didn’t look like an accident. Yay Asher!
Yesterday, the three of us walked into town after Asher woke up from his morning nap, as we’ve been in the habit of doing recently. We looked around for some baby mittens because, sadly, the autumn chill is in the air and the summer sun has quickly faded. We went to baby Gap, then went to a Starbucks to feed Asher (we don’t drink coffee usually, so that’s typically the only reason we go there). I went to the Apple store to pay homage, and then we headed back home.
On the way out, however, Candice and I started talking about how much we miss getting burritos from Nannamexico, a good lunch place we used to frequent. We’ve been having lunch at home while Asher takes his noon nap, so we haven’t had a chance to grab our fix of Mexican food.
I had a flash of brilliance while we were walking, and we decided that I should run to Nannamexico and get two burritos to go. Meanwhile, Candice would take Asher home and get him ready to nap. We figured by the time he was asleep and in his crib, I’d be back with fresh burritos and we’d be ready to dig in. Sounds like a good plan, right?!
Well, all was going well at first. I ordered the burritos from our friend Mane (the guy who runs the place), and while I was waiting I got a call from Candice. She was halfway home and discovered that she didn’t have any keys to get in the house, Asher was starting to get fussy, and it had just started raining. So, basically… everything that could go wrong.
At this point I did something that I would never normally do… I got a taxi from the city center to home. It’s a little embarrassing, actually… taxis are overpriced and I had a perfectly good bike at home and… a thousand other reasons why we don’t like to take taxis. But, since our plan was going south rather quickly, I was just trying to get home quickly so that I didn’t stroll up to the house thirty minutes later with the burritos only to find my wife and screaming baby outside in the rain freezing and soaking wet!
So I took my losses and paid the taxi. I arrived just in time to let Candice in, then we ate, Asher took a long nap, and we laid down on the couch and relaxed, just enjoying our Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to me, my wallet was still in the taxi taking a ride around the town.
That’s right, in my haste to pay the taxi and grab the burritos and answer an incoming call all at the same time, I left my wallet sitting right there on the seat.
This story could have turned out very very badly, but, as luck would have it… or, rather… as divine providence saw fit to spare me from a crappy day. I got an email before I even realized the wallet was missing. Of all the people in the world to be getting into the same taxi, it was a guy doing a Masters degree in Philosophy of Religion who lives in the theological training school just down the street from us. We are both doing degrees in the Faculty of Divinity and had never met, but he found my wallet :). All in all, it was a pretty good day; crisis averted. John saved the day.
So… all that to say… thanks, John!
P.S. – Here’s the picture of the day. This is the face you make when you realize you’ve lost your wallet…
We have been getting tons of smiles and laughs and squeals from our little guy lately, and y’all, it is just the sweetest thing. And, he is officially rolling over. Fun!
Asher can’t wait to meet all of his aunts and uncles. We are so glad his aunties know how to buy baby clothes… even if they are self-promoting. :)
Check out that bald head! He lost all of his hair except for some in the back and a little bit on top which can be styled into a nice, thin comb-over. He’s like a little old man. Adorable.
We are headed to America in a month (!) and we are pretty pumped about lots of things: seeing our family and friends, celebrating the wedding of great friends, central heat and air, going to familiar stores, and, of course, eating at some of our favourite places! But in light of our new “schedule” with Asher, we are realizing that we might not actually be able to go out to dinner at all! OR… we could go and get the senior citizen’s special at 4.30pm at Denny’s. Who knew life with a 3 month old would be so thrilling?! ;)
